[Previous report][Next report] Run No. 925 on Sunday, 27 July 2008 Mui Ne Hangover Run |
Short Stump, you’re a bastard. You almost sabotaged the Sunday run by plying most of the Hash with alcohol until the wee hours the night before. Certainly, this Hash Scribe was paying the price of the previous night’s excesses. After a largish feed at the Victoria Resort breakfast buffet and a couple of strong coffees, the Scribe was ready to face the world.
Rounding up the Hashers for the Sunday run was a repeat of the previous day. Despite Good To The Last Drop’s humungous organising efforts, nobody seemed to know where and when to meet. Notably absent were Dribble Dick, Two Dicks, Bush Wallaby and Doggy Style. Eventually, we got ourselves loaded aboard the buses and headed off for the start. En route, Sheep Sub flagged us down, having missed the bus and having to catch up to us in a taxi. Safely aboard the bus, she suddenly realized that she’d left her shoes in the taxi. Too late, gone forever.
The Sunday run was an old favourite Mui Ne trail, but one which hasn’t been done for almost two and a half years. Starting from the main drag along the Mui Ne beach, the pack charged off over a bridge, along the river bank and eventually into a shallow stream, the famous Fairy Spring. The Fairy Spring seeps from the Mui Ne sand dunes and winds its way through sandstone gullies and over waterfalls before reaching the ocean. With a hard-packed, flat running surface and four inches of water, the running is scenic, fun and wet. Being a canyon, there is no place to go for the first couple of kilometers. The Hares did their best with occasional false trails to either side, but veteran Saigon Hashers Nutsucker, Tonto and Pencil Dick were too canny to fall for these obvious traps.
We left the Fairy Stream when we reached the waterfall. The only way out was by scaling a towering cliff, a prospect so fearsome that Tonto, Nutsucker, Lost Our Seoul and Deaf Teapot elected to return downstream to find a safer route. After blundering into the walkers, they had to gird their collective loins and follow their more courageous comrades.
The trail led into the sand dunes bordering what used to be lush rice paddies but is now mainly building sites. By the time the pack reached the top of the dunes, the sun, hard running, soft sand and the previous night’s beer started getting to them. The pack slowed to a walk for the bulk of the sand dune section. The energy levels picked up once we were back in the shade again and the pack picked up the pace. Eventually, the trail led back to the few rice paddies that are left in the area. At this point, everybody (including the Hares) had trouble finding paper. At this point, Dribble Dick called Pencil Dick on his mobile and asked where the Hash was. *Sigh*. Shortly afterwards, we reached the end. The walkers arrived minutes later led by the evergreen Hand Job, in considerably better shape than the runners.
The Hares picked a nice little coconut palm plantation for the Hash Circle. As the breeze picked up, a few of us started warily eying the coconuts overhead and avoided getting too close to the trees. Social drinking and post-run bullshit followed, before Woofter in his last appearance as GM called the Hash circle to order.
It was the shortest circle since rampaging mobs with pitchforks and burning torches attacked the Hash Circle in Cu Chi in 2001 [a tale for another day - Ed.]. The heat, accumulated beer, lack of virgins and the fact that Woofter had (thankfully) used up the world news the previous afternoon meant that we had no awards, namings or inspiration for public charges. The highlight of the circle was undoubtedly Megan’s introduction of a new Hash down-down song.
